chicks in science
The purpose of the 2008 Chicks in
Science event was to introduce girls in 4th – 6th grades to various
science, technology, and engineering careers; encourage and excite them
to pursue educational studies in
these areas; and facilitate relationships between the girls and
professional women in scientific disciplines. We encouraged them to
bring their moms or other important role models or mentors. And we
celebrated their femininity (yes – you can be a “cool chick” and be
smart!) by giving away fun backpacks filled with lots if girly stuff;
offering free manicures and chocolates; and decorating the MSU-Billings
gym in hot pink and purple.
Our hope for this first time event was 15 booths, and 150 girls and their moms.
There were 34 interactive, hands-on booths; 13 sponsors; and 157 volunteers and 938 participants: 752 chicks, 183 non-chicks, 1 First Lady, 1 capital dog, and 1 Governor!
